While this utility has esulted in a wealth of anecdotal evidence supporting the efficacy of 3D printing in medicine, there has not been a statistically-significant, prospective clinical trial to quantify the usefulness of 3D heart models for surgical planning. Children’s National Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and Phoenix Children’s Hospital have come together to lead a multi-center clinical trial to answer the questions of efficacy of 3D models in hope of spreading wider adoption of the technology as well as motivating mechanisms for potential insurance reimbursement.
