As described in his seminal paper, “A Standard Test for Laboratory Animal Bone” (1971), and seen here, Dr. Frankel developed a technique using novel instrumentation that resulted in an easily reproducible method of controlling bone loading rates (i.e. adjusting force with time). The innovation, and associated experiments, radically advanced our understanding of the mechanisms of acute fractures and bone’s response to energy. In recognition of this work, and for his cumulative contribution to the orthopaedic discipline, Dr. Frankel was knighted by the king of Sweden.
Viewers will gain perspective on the early days of biomechanical study, and be introduced to an easy-to-understand tutorial on acute fracture mechanics and the role of energy in injury.
